Year of the Novel

Twelve full moons in a teal-ombre sky full of handwritten words.

Is this the year for your novel? In the Creative Writing sector of SPACE, we conceive of our written work developmentally:

  • First a work is a seedling as you are drafting it; the project needs love and time and plenty of encouragement;
  • Then it’s a sapling, ready to be shaped with questions and raised stakes, and the insights you gained from drafting;
  • Finally it’s a tree, undergoing careful work such as continuity editing, theme work, and character deepening.

Welcome to Launching Your Seedling Story, a series of three modules designed to support writers in the seedling stage of creating a novel.

In June, it’s Character and Voice with Christopher Bartlett — click the link to listen to his plans for the class.

In July, Plot and Structure with Sparrow F. Alden, more on that class in the video below.

And in August, Setting and Worldbuilding with Will Estes, all about adapting your setting to make it carry your story more strongly.

So click the links and daydream about the possibilities! This three-module presentation grows out of the pilot test we ran in 2024, Novel In A Year. We had a ton of fun in that twelve-module adventure, and learned lots about forming the writing cohort, timing our craft and feedback sessions, and facilitating learning experiences for a wide variety of adults. The first thing that we learned is to do the seedling work and then rest a few months as we write our socks off on our first drafts. Therefore the idea of Launching Your Seedling Story was born. Three modules, three months, then chance to regroup in the company of your cohort.

Sparrow mentions “the link in the chat” if you want a feedback workshop. Simply write to [email protected] if that’s your wish!
