While myriad Mythgardians are migrating to Massachusetts for Mythcon, only one is braving the 72nd World Science Fiction Convention in London (a/k/a, “Loncon 3”) from August 14 – 18. Dr. Amy H. Sturgis, who will once again be offering her two-part “History of Science Fiction” courses in the upcoming Fall and Spring trimesters at Mythgard (see description below), is heading to the land of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who for a jolly good time.
The Eagle was able to sit down (at a computer keyboard) with Dr. Sturgis (who was at another keyboard many miles away) for a temporally asynchronous (i.e., via email) interview exclusive.
“I’m thrilled to be taking part in what promises to be one of the largest World Science Fiction Conventions, if not the largest, in the con’s 72-year history,” Dr. Sturgis exclaimed. “It’s particularly exciting for me to be able to talk about the relationship of Sherlock Holmes and science fiction 1) in London, the home of Holmes, and 2) in 2014, the year which marks the character’s 160th birthday.”
Dr. Sturgis went on to describe her excitement at getting to brush shoulders with one of her sci-fi heroes. “I’m also delighted to have the honor of presenting a Prometheus Hall of Fame Award to Lois McMaster Bujold, a masterful author whose work I have taught and will be teaching again in my science fiction course at Mythgard.” Dr. Sturgis previously interviewed Bujold during last year’s online SofaCon, and they first met in 2006 at Mythcon 37 where both Bujold and Dr. Sturgis were guests of honor.
The Eagle’s editorial staff wishes Dr. Sturgis safe travels to London for the event, and we look forward to hearing more about her trip when she returns.
