What happens when history becomes legend? Legend becomes myth? And some things that should not have been forgotten become lost? How do stories change as they are passed from one person to the next, from one generation to the next? This year’s Sunshine Moot invites you to participate in a unique and immersive experiment in the preservation of memory. We will explore the very methods by which the peoples of Middle-earth, from the Elves of Tirion to the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm, would have kept their histories alive before Cirth and Tengwar.
What to Expect:
In this one-of-a-kind all-day workshop, attendees will become the keepers of a forgotten age. We will gather not as a passive audience, but as an active community of loremasters tasked with a vital mission: the reconstruction of a lost chronicle. Our Moot will be visited from “strangers from distant lands”. (Why have they come? What is their purpose? You will have to register to learn the whole story!) Moot attendees will be divided into small, dedicated circles. All circles will be assigned different foundational stories throughout the Moot from Tolkien’s legendarium: the Music of the Ainur and the rise of the Valar, the trials of the Second Age, the adventures of the Third Age, etc. (See the schedule below for the different topics).
Your task is to recollect and retell. You and your circle will collaborate to piece together these epic narratives from your collective memory. Debate the key events, embody the important characters, and decide which important details are most crucial to preserve the Spirit of the Tale. Each circle will speak with a Stranger, who will take down what you tell them, and recap it to the rest of the Moot at the end of each session.
The Grand Finale:
The workshop, and the Moot, will conclude with a plenary discussion where we reflect on our collective experience. What did we remember? What did we, perhaps universally, forget or alter? What does this teach us about the nature of oral history, the fragility of facts, and the power of story? We will connect our own hands-on experience directly to the themes of loss and recovery that are so central to Tolkien’s work.
Come to Orlando and be prepared not just to sit and listen, but to step forward and speak, to remember, and to become a part of the living tradition itself.
Please read our Regional Moot Recording and Privacy Notice. You will be required to agree to its contents in our registration system before completing your ticket purchase.
