The Intersection of Past and Future
Signum University and the Mythgard Institute invite you to join us on Saturday, March 23, 2024, for our first annual Potomac Moot 2024. This hybrid event will occur at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston, VA. This year, our theme is, “The Intersection of Past and Future”.
Register Here for Potomac Moot
Literature is a powerful medium that can transport readers across time and space, connecting them with different cultures, histories, and realities. We will explore how some works can re-use and adapt the stories of the past to create engaging and meaningful stories of the future, while other works blend historical and futuristic elements in unique ways. Some examples could include:
- J.R.R. Tolkien’s unfinished time-travel novel, The Notion Club Papers, which links his fictional world of Middle-earth, the real-world legend of Atlantis, and a future Great Britain.
- The many modern-day Jane Austen adaptations, such as Clueless, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and From Prada to Nada, which update and reinterpret her themes of love, class, and manners for contemporary audiences.
- Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash, which imagines a future where ancient Sumerian writing is used to hack minds via virtual reality
We invite you to learn about the future by exploring the past, blending them both together here in the present, the intersection of Past and Future.
