CFP: Horror and its Effects in Fantastic Literature

“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” H.P. Lovecraft, Supernatural Horror in Literature

Fear and Horror are foundational elements of the Fantastic — whether it is in literature, visual,  video, and audio formats. Whether it is explicit, as is the case with the Nazgul and their Dementor descendants, or in the underlying themes and tropes, as is the case when Frodo looks at Gollum and sees what fate may lie in his future, it is arguably necessary for the genre to function.

Magnolia Moot 2020’s primary theme focuses on horror in the fantastic — although papers and creative presentation on other topics will be considered. Please submit proposals to [email protected] by March 28, 2020.
